The greatest gift is a passion for reading – Elizabeth Hardwick
The title may seem like an oxymoron because many kids think biographies are boring. They just haven’t found the right ones. YWAM Publishing offers some of the best biographies for kids I’ve seen. Additionally, many kids I know get hooked on reading by reading biographies.
On the other hand, some kids really like history. In fact, I tutor kids that don’t like to read, but love history. Guess what I serve them? Biographies.
Biographies allow readers to learn history through the lives of men and women who lived it.- Simple Homeschool
Biographies for kids help develop a passion for reading.
Even if children don’t like biographies or history, parents read these kids’ biographies aloud to their children. The children beg for more; at least mine did.
I was first introduced to YWAM Publishing when I attended a leadership conference. They gave me a free book and a free audiobook. I was impressed by their generosity because they gave every leader a book and audiobook while asking for nothing in return. I read the book to my children. They were hooked.
They love the audiobooks too. I like the audiobooks because when my children hit their tween years, they didn’t want me to read aloud to them any more. An audiobook is a great way to ensure that they continue to expand their vocabulary.
Benefits to biographies:
Lean about history in a fun way.
Increase vocabulary. Biographies have vocabulary that isn’t in our everyday language.
Biographies make you think and learn about life in a different way.
Biographies teach valuable life lessons such as overcoming failure.
You learn about people that shape our world.
YWAM biographies for kids are stories with “real people, incredible, inspiring true stories for ages 10 & up… We believe these books are the best written, non-fiction biographies available for the entire family to enjoy together.”
The following is a sample of the books my kids love:
Heroes of History is a unique biography series that brings the shaping of history to life with the remarkable true stories of fascinating men and women who changed the course of history.
The stories of Heroes of History are told in an engaging narrative format, where related history, geography, government, and science topics come to life and make a lasting impression. This is a premier biography line for the entire family.
- William Wilberforce: Take Up the Fight
This best-selling, missionary biography series chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory.
Please check out YWAM Publishing’s website. They offer e-books for every device, MP3 downloads, paperbacks, CDs, and some of the books come in other languages such as Spanish. They offer missionary biographies too. You can also get curriculum guides to go with the books. (This is not a sponsored post. I’m not getting compensated by you visiting their site. I just highly recommend these books because my children devoured them. It is good, clean reading for kids.) These truly are biographies kids love to read.
Additionally, I am super excited because I will visit their booth in the exhibit hall at the HEAV Convention June 11- 13, 2015. You can count on me picking up a new title of one of their biographies for kids. My kids love them.
I’m pleased to partner with HEAV (Home Educators Association of Virginia) to share convention news.
What biographies do your kids like? I’d love to know. 🙂
